Named for the etchings left by human hands, Petroglyph National Monument is home to over 20,000 rock carvings produced by early Native Americans and Spanish settlers. In addition to this human history, the site contains many amazing natural formations including five volcanic cones and an abundance of wildlife. Hiking trails snake out from the monument trailhead, offering plently of options for a bit of exercise and enjoyment of the scenery. Explore exhibits in the visitor center, which is the former home of Dr. Sophie Aberle, the first practicing applied anthropologist. The monument is located on the western outskirts of Albuquerque, near Ladera Golf Course and Indian Petroglyph State Park.
